Hi! I’m James.

NB: Everything on this website is very out of date. I made the site when I was a year or two out of uni, and it’s amazing to me how much what I want to say about myself on the internet has changed since.

I still work in engineering, and still try to be a jack of all trades, but I’m lucky enough to be working in an area that better aligns with what I think is important. I work in the ice core team at the British Antarctic Survey where I do field projects, make and operate equipment and instrumentation, and generally support a great team of scientists as we try to better understand the climate of the Earth’s past, aiming to improve our understanding of what’s coming in the world we’re all making for ourselves.

I do want to update the site at some point… I’d still like to talk about the engineering work I do now – maybe showcase the work of the scientists I work with and share some experiences of fieldwork in the polar regions – but also I’d like this to be a space where I can share things other than work. My home projects have a lot less to do with my career now, and there are so many more compelling things to talk about than work! I’ve quit social media and most news and have not looked back at all. I think LinkedIn is particularly awful (I see very little there that isn’t shallow self-promotion ) so I’d like to make this site something as different from that as I can, something more interesting to me than a fresh grad’s little portfolio / CV booster.

I’m an engineer with interests in new product development, software, and startups. I graduated from the Manufacturing Engineering Tripos (MET) at the University of Cambridge – a specialisation with focuses ranging from manufacturing and operations, through automation and product design, to management and entrepreneurship.

I’m currently developing a new line of products at an automation firm in the Cambridge area, pushing my boundaries as an engineer early in my career and loving the challenge.

This blog sets out to aid and document my plans to undertake more personal engineering projects and to grow more as an engineer outside of my employment. Here, I’ll have a particular focus on software development but will be doing plenty of projects in other areas of engineering, too.

Oh, and I like other things too!
